How To Become A Mature Model

written by
Erin Flock

There is a strong demand for mature models (also known as classic models) in the modelling industry, with many of our enquiries being for our classic model division. It’s a common misconception that models need to be young and have a youthful appearance, however our classic model division is full of talented mature models aged mid-late thirties and these models can continue modelling well into their 80s or older.

In recent years, the fashion and advertising industries have started to recognise the importance of inclusivity and diversity in their campaigns and although there is still a way to go, this shift has led to a greater appreciation for mature models and their unique qualities, breaking free from traditional stereotypes. At Sandra Reynolds our classic models have worked with some of the UK’s biggest brands, such as Sam Bunting Skincare, BMW, Tesco, Charlotte Tilbury, Adnams, TUI, Fnatic, The Other House, Wallis and Plantur 39 (just to name a few!). WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A CLASSIC MODEL?

At Sandra Reynolds we represent models with varying levels of experience within the industry, and although we need to know that you can be confident and comfortable in front of the camera to be on our books, we do encourage anyone to apply. Aspiring mature models have the opportunity to enter the industry at various stages of their lives. Some may have established careers in other fields and are looking for a fresh start or an exciting new challenge, others may have raised families and are now ready to pursue their lifelong dream.

Our model bookers actively scout for individuals with the potential to become successful mature models. Also seeking out qualities that go beyond physical appearance, placing emphasis on factors such as confidence, versatility, adaptability, and a strong work ethic. We had the pleasure of having a chat with the lovely Katie Isles, one of our fantastic SR classic models. Keep reading to discover her perspective on being a mature model...

SR: "How long have you been modelling for?"

KATIE: "I've been modelling now for about eight years, I did a bit (of modelling) as a teenager, and then I thought I was too old at 21 and started again at almost 41."

SR: "What was your favourite campaign that you've been on?"

KATIE: "I've had quite a few I've really loved. Probably one of my favourite ones because it was such a fun day was for a shopping centre, and we had to throw food at each other, eat lots of cream cakes, slurp noodles, and we just had lots and lots of fun with food."

SR: "What would be your advice to someone looking to get into modelling?"

KATIE: "Probably to develop a thick skin, there is unfortunately a lot of rejection in modelling, and it's generally nothing personal and that's the hardest thing to learn. I think when you first start that you try really hard, and you really want the job, but you might not get it, and you've got to be able to bounce back and keep going!"

SR: "What's one of your passions?"

KATIE: "I'm a really passionate pro-ager. I want everyone to enjoy their life at every age and be the very best version they can be and not fear ageing, because let me tell you, if you haven't reached it yet, life gets better as you get older, not worse!"

DIVERSITY IN MATURE MODELLING

Mature modelling greatly celebrates diversity and encourages models to embrace their own unique beauty. It reminds us that beauty is not limited to a particular age, size or background, but instead it’s a reflection of character and confidence.

For brands and clients, mature models present a great opportunity to connect with a diverse audience. They represent a more realistic and relatable depiction of the consumer base, making it easier for customers to envision themselves using the products or services being advertised.

“Whether it’s the number of briefs that we receive on a daily basis or the amazing new talent that we are on the lookout for, it is clear to see that the industry is open to talent of all ages and appearances.” – Senior Model Booker, Georgia Butler
